ASKA (also known as Aska Matsumiya) is a Los Angeles based musician, composer, and artist with a magical slant. A classically trained pianist, she eventually took a step back from the perfection of that kind of music and started to experiment with her sound in different bands throughout the years, eventually returning to solo songwriting a few years ago.
After "There Are Many Of Us", one of the songs from her first EP, wast featured in the Spike Jonze short film "I'm Here" and won "Best Original Music" at the AICP Awards, ASKA turned her attention to composing music for films and documentaries, as well as fashion campaigns and commercials. She recently scored the film "Paper Flower" and a short film for Phillip Lim and Lane Crawford, as well as numerous fashion campaigns including Alexander McQueen, Kate Spade, and Anne Taylor. (See all work in ASKA's reel).
Early this year, ASKA started a new synth-pop band called ESP with her brother Seiyu Matsumiya and Brother Reade's Bobby Evans, and the group just finished recording their first EP. In addition to this new musical endeavor, ASKA has also been commissioned for art installations, including the The Rainbow Project at The Standard Hotel, a charity endeavor which featured projections of photos of rainbows from all over the world as well as a collaboration with Lucky Dragons, who installed a rainbow machine in the lobby of the hotel.
